Glen Ridge Community Pool 2007
Annual Report Under the guidance of the Executive Committee and Dan
Mueller, Pool Manager, the Glen Ridge Community Pool had a terrific 2007
season. The pool ended the year with 368 members, a new pool deck, a budget
in the black, a terrific swim team and great memories. The following
details the 2007 highlights in the areas of Operations, Pool House, Finance,
Membership, Communication, and Programming. OPERATIONS We are pleased to report once again
a relatively uneventful operational season. Prior to the opening of this
past season the Children’s Pool main fill line broke. We were able to replace
it quickly. The Children’s pool only lost one weekend of operation. At the end
of 2007, a leak in the pool was identified and it will be repaired prior to
opening 2008. The pool also purchased a backup motor for the slip in
2007. Otherwise all other systems operated adequately with no breakdowns
or unplanned repairs. To keep expenses down, Executive
Committee members and Pool staff volunteered their time to landscape the deck
and areas surrounding the pool. Prior to opening for the 2008 season
we have preventive maintenance plans including caulking of all the gutters and
we will be inspecting all surface areas for crack and perform repairs as
necessary. POOL DECK CONSTRUCTION The pool deck was built prior to Opening Day 2007. The
Deck design, by local Architect Mark Wright, allowed for increasing the
concrete apron around the pool, providing space for additional tables and
chairs. Bids for the job were accepted in February and Pakis Construction
was awarded the job on March 27th. The majority of the construction was
completed by opening day. Additional punch list items were completed
after the season ended with all work done by year end 2007. Prior to Opening Day 2008, the Pool plans to implement the
following improvements. Funds for these improvements are in the pool
operating budget.
During 2008 the Executive Committee and Board of Trustees
will analyze the financial and construction issues regarding Phase II – Main
building construction. FINANCIAL During the 2007 season, the pool incurred approximately
$316,000 in expenses and brought in $333,000 in income. Income was
predominantly from membership dues, although guest fees did contribute
$16,000. The GRCP submitted refunds totaling $39,360 to Founding Members
who resigned during the 2006-2007 season. Additionally, the new pool deck
construction, including architectural and engineering fees, cost $185,000. FINANCIAL - continued State Tax Assessment -
During the 2007 Season, the State of NJ assessed a 7% tax on pool
memberships. After collecting the monies during the season, the
State repealed its decision for non-profits and municipalities, which
included the Pool. Members are entitled to a refund of a portion of
the state tax. The refund applies only to a pro-rated portion of
tax that had been paid covering the period between July 1, 2007 and
September 3, 2007. The gross amount of the taxes collected from
individual pool members during 2007 were as follows: New Members
$87.50; Family $52.50; Couple $35; Single $24.50; and Caregiver $7.
Pool members are entitled to a refund based upon these applicable amounts for
the pro-rated 65-day period. Neither the GR Community Pool
nor the Borough of Glen Ridge has these funds, as they were paid to the State
as originally required. The Pool will contact email members to explain
this process. Founding Member Fee Donation – In
November 2007, the Executive Committee mailed
Founding Members a letter requesting consideration of donating their founding
membership fee. Only six donations were made in 2007. Additional
donations of founding member fees would greatly help the pools vitality and
forward progress if as many founding members as
possible could consider the donation. MEMBERSHIP During the 2007 Season, the following changes to the
membership occurred:
To encourage new members to join the pool, membership
outreach initiatives were undertaken: · In
February 2007, a letter was sent to all Glen Ridge residents who purchased a
